Memorial Service for Karen Mock

A memorial service will be held for our dear friend Karen Mock at 11am on Saturday December 3rd at The Episcopal Church on Edisto. The public is invited to join us in remembering Karen.

Karen was a beloved member of the community of Edisto and The Episcopal Church on Edisto where she served on the church’s Mission Council and Growth and Outreach Committees.  The following is her obituary:

Karen Jo Mock, a longtime resident of Edisto Island, died of multiple organ failure at MUSC on October 2, 2022.  Karen was born on April 15, 1952 in Altoona, Penn., to Charles and Betty Mock.  She graduated from Altoona High School in 1970 and received her BS in Early Childhood Education from Geneva College in Pennsylvania and later earned her MA in Education from Ashford University.

After teaching for 20 years in Altoona, she visited Edisto Island on sabbatical and, falling in love with island life, retired from the Altoona School District and relocated to Edisto.  She taught kindergarten in area schools including North Charleston, Walterboro, Green Pond and at two different points at Jane Edwards.  At Jane Edwards she established a gardening program and a farm animal program, including sheep, goats and rabbits to teach children about animal care and responsibility.  For a number of years she also worked part-time for Bobo Lee, first at the Pavilion and later at Po Pigs Barbecue in addition to working with Bobo in his catering business.

She was a member of The Episcopal Church on Edisto and a member of the church’s Mission Council.

She is survived by sister Jodi Gianfrancesco, brothers Richard and Jack, and nieces Kelsey, Ashlyn and Isabella Gianfrancesco, and a nephew Cody Sullivan.

The Episcopal Church on Edisto worships in the New First Missionary Baptist Church’s historic sanctuary located at 1644 Highway 174, Edisto Island, SC  29438.
